'I just got back today and… I’m fuming': Roommate drama blows up after 2 roommates gang up on the third in an attempt for some petty power play, instead, it's the cat they promised to cat-sit that gets neglected for 9 days

We can tell you from experience that leaving your cat in the hands of someone else while you go on vacation is one of the most difficult things that you can do. We're sure that all of you guys who have cats understand. These are our family members, we take care of them with the same affection that we would our baby. We do our best to look for someone that we trust to take care of our cats while we're away. We write clear instructions for our cat-sitters. But mistakes happen, and sometimes, a cat-sitter breaks your trust in the worst ways possible. 

Leaving the cat to their roommates was definitely a mistake here. This roommate has cat-sat before. There was reason to trust her. But there were also enough reasons to be suspicious, and this cat owner knew it. Their gut told them that they should look for someone else, but out of respect for the roommate, they didn't. In the end, it was the cat who hurt the most because of the incident, and we are very glad that the cat and its owner are moving out of that house soon.

    I'd organised a pet sitter to come to the house and drop by every two days to feed, water, play with my cat and change her litter whilst I was away for 9 nights.

    My housemate said she was uncomfortable with this and said that she'd gladly take care of the cat and that I should've just asked her instead. I made the compromise as it's my housemate's house too.

    I just got back today and... I'm fuming. The state of her food and water bowls, her litter was packed with ... I'm just astounded. I'm so so mad and upset for my poor baby who was neglected for 9 nights. There were sooo many ants and mould and pieces of carpet in the food bowl! Water doesn't look like it's been changed for days.     It's confounding because my housemate has looked after the cat before and this didn't happen. But that was also before a bunch of drama with our other housemate.

    Those two girls paired up in a way but the housemate who 'helped' me out assured me our relationship had not changed just because I was no longer friends with the other. But now I worry if her laziness was actually secretly vindictive. I knew I didn't ask her to help this second time around for a reason - my gut was telling me something. I'm just so mad I didn't listen.

    AIO if I blow up at her? I feel like blowing up at her. I only have 7 weeks left in the house though and then me and my baby are out of here. I guess I just want to feel validated a little. I'm so sad, mad and disappointed.

  • We don't care what led her to treat your cat like this, it's unacceptable. Even the most “justifiable” reason is not good enough. Even if she's mad at you for some justifiable reason, the cat didn't do anything to her and did not deserve this. We would have blown up so fast.

    takingastepbackwards NOT overreacting. in fact (praying to all heavens she doesn't!!!!) if she gets sick, at all, and requires going to the vet, ask your roommate to pay half. keep an eye on your baby for constipation and urination issues, there's no way of making sure she was getting the proper amount of water during those 9 days, which let's be realistic, she probably was not. watch for any sudden weight gain or weight loss accompanied by a fever and or any bathroom issues, and keep an eye on

    if she's showing any signs of being sick at any point within i'd say the next week of you being back, i would take her to the vet just to be 100% sure. the mix between molding food/potential digestion of ants/bacteria buildup in the litterbox she had a lot exposed to her in a short amount of time :( i hope you're both alright. if you blow up on her, tell someone first, for your own sake.

    edingirl It's not an overreaction. However, I would probably restrict any confrontation to showing your roommate how hurt and disappointed you are. Take your cat to the vet, hopefully all is ok but if not then your roommate needs to pay the vet bill for any treatment. I'm guessing your cat has missed cuddles and caring while you were away as well. I would be thinking about moving out asap and not waiting several weeks, those girls seem toxic and slightly unnerving. Good luck and keep us posted.

    jummpscaare OP Thanks so much for the advice. They certainly have started to unnerve me and I would love to leave earlier but I simply can't, as I'll be moving halfway across the world to another country. I've learned a lot of lessons through this.

    jummpscaare OP She's fine now thank God! She's eating and drinking and playing normally, she's happy again. But she was pretty lethargic when I got home.

  • Seven weeks would probably feel like a very long time in this situation, and we understand why you would hesitate to say anything. But we still think that you should. If the cat, god forbid, does end up sick from this, which is entirely possible, then this roommate needs to know that it is her fault and any costs would be her responsibility.
